5 Best Recumbent Exercise Bike
If you want to get some high-quality leg and cardio exercise, then you can’t really do much better than a really good recumbent exercise bike. These bikes let you sit in comfort, while still getting a very serious workout.
However, as with any other exercise machine out there, there are about a thousand different models to choose from, which makes it hard to separate the good machines from the bad ones.
Thankfully, we have done that for you. In this article, we are going to review five bikes and tell you their pros and cons. If you want our opinion on the best recumbent exercise bike, it is the Marcy Recumbent Exercise Bike with Resistance ME-709.
The Best Recumbent Exercise Bikes in the Market 2019
# 1 Marcy Recumbent Exercise Bike with Resistance ME-709
To start off our search for the best recumbent exercise bike, we are going to be taking a look at the Marcy Recumbent Exercise Bike with Resistance ME-709. There isn’t anything particularly special about this recumbent exercise bike. It doesn’t have any features that will blow you away with how unique they are or anything like that. However, what does make the Marcy Recumbent Exercise Bike notable and worth reviewing on this list is the fact that it is just a very well-made recumbent exercise bike. As we will show you in this review, it has all the sorts of features that you really want in a good exercise bike.
One of the most important features to look for when you are searching for a recumbent exercise bike is different resistance levels. This should be obvious, after all, if you don’t have different resistance levels, then you won’t be getting much of a workout. Thankfully, the Marcy Recumbent Exercise Bike with Resistance ME-709 comes equipped with 8 different magnetic resistance levels; changing the resistance level of the bike on the fly is also very easy.
Another important thing to look for when you are searching for the best recumbent exercise bike is an overall heavy duty design. Too many exercise bikes are designed very flimsily and with lower-quality materials that don’t last. There is nothing worse than investing in an exercise bike, getting used to it, only to have it break after a year or so of use. Thankfully, this isn’t an issue with the Marcy. It is made with very heavy duty stainless steel that will last.
Two other important components of any recumbent exercise bike, the pedals and the seat, are also well-made. The pedals are solid, and you can get a grip on them without too much of an issue. We imagine that most of you will find it easy to go hard on this bike because of the great pedals. The seat is also great and deserves to be mentioned. It is very comfortable. In general, recumbent exercise bikes tend to have comfortable seats. However, even by that high standard, the nicely padded seat on the Marcy deserves mention.
We should also mention that the Marcy comes with a screen that keeps track of all the relevant exercise info that you want to be kept track of when using the bike. This includes distance traveled, calories burned, etc.
Is this a perfect bike? No, sadly it is not. Personally, we would have liked it to be a bit more customizable than it currently is. Being able to do things like raise the seat more or the handles would have been nice.
Made from heavy duty stainless steel for durability and longevity.
8 levels of magnetic resistance.
Could be more customizable or adjustable.
#2 HARISON Recumbent Exercise Bike Stationary
For the next review on this list, we are going to be looking at what is undoubtedly the highest-end recumbent exercise bike that we have reviewed so far on this list. The HARISON Recumbent Exercise Bike Stationary is definitely a very high-end recumbent exercise bike, as you can probably tell from the price tag. However, as we plan to show you in our review, it definitely earns this price tag. It has a ton of very good and useful features.
For starters, it has a lot of different resistance levels for you to choose from. Typically, most entries on our best recumbent exercise bike list will have around 8 or so different levels of resistance. The HARISON Recumbent Exercise Bike Stationary ends up going above and beyond in these circumstances, as it boasts 14 different levels of magnetic resistance.
As we have said in other reviews and will say again, having these different levels of resistance to choose from are really helpful because they let you customize your workout. You can choose different resistance levels for different jobs.
Where it really earns its price tag is by giving you a bunch of different quality of life features. For example, most exercise bikes have a screen for keeping track of important info, but only the HARISON has a holder for your tablet.
Comes with in-depth LCD screen.
Has a holder for your tablet.
Really heavy duty frame that is made using stainless steel.
Comfortable seat that is designed to last.
Comes with 14 different resistance levels.
Most expensive entry that we have reviewed on this list.
#3 Marcy Regenerating Recumbent Exercise Bike with Adjustable Seat, Pulse Monitor and Transport Wheels ME-706
If you have been paying attention to our best incumbent exercise bike list, then you probably recognize the name Marcy because we reviewed a bike from them earlier on in this list. This particular bike from Marcy does share some features in common, as you might expect. However, trust us when we say that the Marcy Regenerating Recumbent Exercise Bike with Adjustable Seat, Pulse Monitor and Transport Wheels ME-706 has enough unique features to justify its inclusion on this list as a completely separate entry.
Before moving onto what’s different about the Marcy ME-706, let’s first look at what’s the same. Much like the previous Marcy bike that we reviewed, this bike is made of really high-quality materials. You can definitely see the very tough stainless steel that the body of the bike is made out of. Just in general, it is a very well put together bike. We could easily see this lasting you an extremely long time if you were to go with this bike. This is good to know because this exercise bike is on the pricier end of the spectrum, so knowing that you are going to get your money’s worth.
It should also be noted that this Marcy exercise bike is just as comfortable as the other bike from that brand that we reviewed earlier. The seat on the ME-706 has a lot of very soft padding and you won’t suffer any soreness after a long exercise session (at least not on your back or bum). It even has padded handlebars for extra comfort.
But, enough about what is the same with this bike, let’s focus on the new features that the ME-706 brings to the table. One major difference is the addition of a pulse tracker. The pulse tracker, as you might expect, keeps track of your pulse while working out. The trackers are located in the handles, so as long as you keep a grip on them while working out, you should get an accurate reading. Your pulse, as well as all the other usual information that you expect to be tracked when working out, is displayed on the large and easy to read LCD screen. This large screen makes it very easy to follow along at a glance when working out really hard.
As you might expect from an exercise bike that is being reviewed on the best recumbent exercise bike list, the Marcy Regenerating Recumbent Exercise Bike with Adjustable Seat, Pulse Monitor and Transport Wheels ME-706 has a ton of adjustable features. Not only can you adjust the resistance level of the bike, but you can also adjust its wheels to make the bike feel more comfortable if you aren’t on a completely flat surface.
Large LCD screen.
Very comfortable seat and handlebars.
Pricier than some other bikes, including the other Marcy bike.
#4 Velocity Exercise Recumbent Exercise Bike
The next entry on our best recumbent exercise bike list that we want to show you is the Velocity Exercise Gray Recumbent Exercise Bike. This isn’t a particularly special exercise bike, but it is pretty well-made and it deserves to be mentioned alongside the other bikes on this list.
Overall, this is a very comfortable exercise bike. The seat has a lot of padding, the pedals are easy to slip into and are secure, and the handlebars are well-placed. It is a very easy exercise bike to use and we imagine that all of you reading this will have no issues with it. Also, given how well-made this exercise bike is, it is actually pretty inexpensive. It may not be classified as “cheap,” but given the quality of it, it could definitely cost a lot more.
Can be moved easily thanks to wheels on the bottom.
8 levels of resistance to pick from.
Secure foot pedals.
Screen is a bit too small.
#5 Vanswe Recumbent Exercise Bike
For the last entry on our best recumbent exercise bike list, we are going to be looking at the Vanswe Recumbent Exercise Bike. This is a great exercise bike and it is a great way to end off this review list.
The Vanswe has a bunch of very good features that deserve to be mentioned, but the feature that we feel most deserves to be highlighted is all the different resistance levels that this bike brings to the table.
Previously, the only bike that had a substantial number of different resistance levels was the HARISON, which had 14 different resistance levels. The Vanswe has slightly more resistance levels, with a total of 16 different magnetic resistance levels. This gives you a large degree of control and versatility when it comes to shaping your workouts. While it isn’t the only great feature that the Vanswe brings to the table, it is certainly one of the more notable ones.
Another great feature of this bike is the act that it is compatible with a number of popular fitness apps. So, you can sync your phone with the bike and instantly share fitness info between the two. It makes keeping track of what you accomplished during your workout a lot easier.
Compatible with phone fitness apps.
Onboard screen keeps track of important information.
Impressive 16 different resistance levels.
Very comfortable seat and handlebar setup.
A bit thinner and flimsier than we would like.
Recumbent Exercise Bike Buying Guide
Hopefully, you found our list looking for the best recumbent exercise bike to be useful. Obviously, we could have reviewed even more recumbent exercise bikes, but we felt that we managed to get a nice selection for you to choose from. So, given that the reviews are done with, you might be curious as to what we plan to do in this second section.
Well, the answer is very simple. See, there are a lot of different kinds of exercise bikes out there. Not everyone knows this, but there are different kinds and knowing the differences between the different kinds can be helpful.
In this buying guide, we are going to focus on the two main kinds of exercise bikes, recumbent exercise bikes, and upright exercise bikes. These are by far the two most popular kinds of exercise bikes out there and so we figured that it would be a good idea to explain the differences between them, as well as why you should go for a recumbent exercise bike instead of an upright exercise bike.
The Differences Between The Two
It isn’t too difficult to see the main differences between recumbent exercise bikes and upright exercise bikes. Just one look at each kind and you can spot the main differences. However, for the sake of being complete, let’s explain them. Recumbent exercise bikes, as you saw from our best recumbent exercise bike list, are bikes that put you into a reclined sitting position. While sitting in this reclined position, you pedal just like it was a regular exercise bike. There are handles, but they are positioned directly on the sides.
Upright exercise bikes work more like regular bikes. The handles are located at the front and the seat is closer to the front of the bike. Both of these factors encourage you to lean forward more, almost until you are hunched over.
Why Recumbent Exercise Bikes Are Better
Alright, so now that you know what each kind of exercise bike is, what are the advantages of each kind? In particular, we want to focus on the advantages of recumbent exercise bikes. Obviously, we are somewhat biased given that this is a best recumbent exercise bike list, but we do genuinely believe that recumbent is the way to go for several reasons.
Less Back Pain
Probably the number one reason to go for a recumbent exercise bike is that it is a lot easier on your back. If you have ever used an upright exercise bike before, then you know exactly what we are talking about. They all seem to have very uncomfortable seats and they force you into a very uncomfortable hunched-over position. These two factors combined can really play havoc on your back and can lead to some really bad soreness, especially after a long exercise session.
With recumbent exercise bikes, the fact that you get to lie back in a chair while working out makes them a lot more comfortable to use. You can exercise for hours and you won’t feel it in your back at all. Furthermore, as you saw from our best recumbent exercise bike list, the seats on these machines tend to be very comfortable and have a lot of padding, which also helps to ensure that you aren’t sore after a session.
Less Joint Strain
Because you are in a comfortable, reclined seating position while working out, a lot less strain is placed on your joints. While upright exercise bikes aren’t dangerous to use by any stretch of the imagination, they do require you to put quite a bit of extra strain on your joints, which isn’t healthy for a variety of reasons. Recumbent bikes just simply put less strain on your joints.
You Can Exercise Longer And Harder
Working off the last two benefits, we can also say that recumbent bikes allow you to exercise longer and harder. Why? Well, you put less strain on your body by using this type of exercise bike, which means that your body aches less and uses less energy. This allows you to exercise for a lot longer and go a lot harder, which obviously helps to burn more calories.
